چکیده

The effect of plasma shielding on dust particle interaction in low pressure plasmas" (2003). The interaction of charged dust particles in plasma is often modeled assuming a constant charge on each particle with the particle charge determined by requiring zero net current to the particles when they are far apart. In this paper the variation in particle charge is calculated for two-body encounters of dust particles taking into consideration mutual electrostatic shielding and a finite Debye length ␭ D. Results are reported for particle radii between 0.0105␭ D and 0.349␭ D. Work is also calculated as a function of particle separation, and it is shown that dust particle energies greater than 50 eV are required before the variation in charge becomes significant. It is also demonstrated that for particles with radii greater than ␭ D /10 the plasma can act to increase the force at separations less than 3␭ D , and it is shown that the Debye–Hü ckel factor (1ϩa/␭ D) may overestimate particle charge by as much as ten percent for larger particles.

Self-consistent three-dimensional model of dust particle transport and formation of Coulomb crystals in plasma processing reactors

Dust particle transport in low-temperature plasmas has received considerable attention due to the desire to minimize contamination of wafers during plasma processing of microelectronic devices and for their use to study nonideal plasmas. Dust particles in radio frequency discharges form Coulomb crystals and display collective behavior under select conditions. In this article, we discuss results...

Effect of ion streaming on particle–particle interactions in a dusty plasma

Dust particles in low-temperature, low-pressure plasmas form Coulomb crystals and display collective behavior under select conditions. The trajectories of ions can be perturbed as they pass by negatively charged dust particles and, in some cases, will converge beyond the particle. This process, called ion streaming, produces a positive potential in the wakefield of the particle that can be larg...

Effect of charge reduction on shielding in dusty plasmas

The shielding of dust particles by each other in a dusty plasma is studied taking into account the effects of dust charging. It is shown that the assumption of a Boltzmann response for dust species is not appropriate under these circumstances. Further, it is shown that in the close-packing limit, dust grains screen each other by charge reduction, and an expression is obtained for this shielding...

Dusty plasmas: synthesis, structure and dynamics of a dust cloud in a plasma

Plasmas are energetic media that can give birth to dust particles due to the presence of reactive gases or plasma-surface interactions. Industrial plasmas are often concerned by these dust particles that can be either unwanted or useful for the process. For fusion plasmas, production of dust particles from wall erosion is a serious issue for performance and safety reasons. In this article, some...
